Why do reviews matter so much?
They are what people compare before they call, and they are one of the main things Google uses to decide who appears in the map results. How many you have, your rating, and how recent they are all count.
How do I get my review link?
Open your Google Business Profile and look for the option to ask for reviews. Google gives you a short link that opens the review form directly. Save it on your phone and put it in your follow up texts and emails.
When and how should I ask?
- Right after a good experience, while it is fresh.
- In person first: “Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? I'll text you the link.”
- Send the link the same day. One reminder at most.
- Ask everyone, every time. A steady flow beats a burst.
What should the message say?
Short and personal. For example:
Thanks for coming in today! If you have a minute, a Google review really helps a small business like ours: [your link]
What is not allowed?
- Paying, or giving discounts or freebies, for reviews.
- Review gating: only asking customers you expect to be happy, or screening them first.
- Writing reviews for yourself, or having staff or family do it.
- Buying reviews. In the US, the FTC also bans fake and paid-for reviews.
Google can remove reviews and restrict profiles that break these rules.
How should I reply to reviews?
- Thank people by name and mention something specific.
- For a bad review, stay calm and brief, and offer to sort it out offline.
- Reply within a few days. People read the replies as much as the reviews.
Common questions
How many Google reviews do I need?
There is no magic number. What matters is having more recent reviews than the businesses you compete with, and a steady flow of new ones. Check the top three in your category and aim past them.
Can I delete a bad Google review?
No. You can report a review that breaks Google's rules, such as spam or a review from someone who was never a customer. Otherwise, a calm reply is the best fix.
Can I offer a discount for a review?
No. Google prohibits incentives for reviews, even for honest ones.
